Bus Driver Sainthood –or– Why Congressional Members may shoot me on sight.
Bus Drivers should make $50 an hour. Teachers should make $80. To put up with these monk…er…children for that many hours requires almost mandatory nomination for sainthood.
I myself would go insane.
Recently I chaperoned my 9 year old’s field trip; an event so traumatic I had to write about it here. I’ve gained a whole new appreciation for the underpaid, underappreciated folk who work in the educational system. Y’all deserve a fat raise and a big pat on the back. (Except for Mrs. Wakefield. She was a mean old crone.)
Here’s what I’m thinking. To our Congressional lawmakers who give great lip service regarding the importance of the educational system, (you know, the one you underfund?), why don’t y’all toss your wallets on the table.
Let’s dance.
Now I’ll admit (grudgingly) that after doing some digging I see you folks in Congress don’t make quite as much as I first thought. Nor is your benefit package as fabalicious as I imagined. You’re lucky–I was about to get downright ornery.
However. You still pull in way more coin than most of the people you serve. (That’d be the ones who work their asses off in order to pay you.) What say we share the wealth a tad, shall we? With the entire country tightening its belt, I don’t feel that’s out of line.
How long does it take a teacher to become vested? 20 years? 25? You folks in Congress become fully vested after 5 years of service, do you not? What’s that all about? Back it up to match the teachers–It would save a whole lot of tax dollars, and y’all hang around forever anyway. While you’re at it, how about you cut back on your perks?
Somebody grab the smelling salts. A couple of Congressmen just hit the floor.
If Congress took a pay cut, or started contributing a little more out-of-pocket to their better-than-most-Americans-can-possibly-afford benefits package, (oh painful agony!) that money could go back into our educational system.
Investing in our children. What a radical thought.
