I don’t generally write about matters of Faith; although I do have an unshakable belief in God in case anyone was wondering. This blog is dedicated to the pursuit of Common Sense, which is something even non-believers can relate to. But Street Preacher got my wheels turning with this post. So here we go.
There’s a certain…shall we say “newer” religion gaining a lot of media attention. Created by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology seems to be the rage among the wealthy. In his book Over My Shoulder, author Lloyd Eshbach quotes Hubbard as saying, “I’d like to start a religion. That’s where the money is.” Four years after making that statement, Mr. Hubbard did that very thing–becoming a multi-millionaire for his efforts.
Well alrighty, then.
I’m not a student of Scientology. I don’t know a great deal about the theology it presents, nor do I care to, thanks. I’ve read enough to know it directly conflicts with my personal beliefs. But people can believe in whatever they want to, be it Christianity, Scientology or Spongebob Squarepants. That said, I feel the need to ask a thoughtful, honest question.
Have these people lost their minds?
A science fiction writer (first clue, right there) creates a religion out of thin air. He claims people are Supreme Beings called Morons Thetans who are waiting for the Mother Ship. In order to get primo seats on said alien transport, they have to pay money. Lots and LOTS of money. (Supreme happiness as achieved through cold cash. Don’t worry–they also take Visa and American Express.) AND…until his death, most of that coin directly lined the pockets of the crafty dude who made the whole thing up.
HelllllooOOOO!
I don’t have to worry about too many Thetans coming to my door to ask me to climb aboard. By Scientology standards, we be po’ folk at my house. Only the wealthy, narcissistic and easily fleeced need apply.
P.T. Barnum would have been so proud.

Well you guys can ride with me if you like, but I get to drive. I’m not familiar with Streetpreacher’s driving habits and Dusty tends to think she’s in the General Lee.

If there is one thing I can drive, it is a spaceship!
